retro internet

I was reading Huai Bin’s recent post on “old school blogging” and he described it perfectly as being ‘pure streams of consciousness’. That sort of got me thinking how much things have changed in the ten years since I started a blog.

When the blog phenomenon first hit Malaysia, many of us had personal blogs which were not ‘commercial’ in any way. Blogs were mostly used as intended – as web logs – a simple vessel of communicating to an online audience where before no one really had the means to. They were mainly online diaries by early adopters of the internet culture – much were ramblings about daily on-goings – like mine, there were webcams, and it was often a popularity contest amongst same-sex bloggers (pre-blog advertising, mind!). Things were very different back then, people had wishlists, and ‘fans’ would buy things off these lists in appreciation.

Through the years the phenomenon outlived the fascination and patience of many, and only a handful of people I know from the early days of blogging remain. However blogs have evolved into these things where people could make a living off, and thus many old and new blogs became topic-centric and (in my opinion anyway) has lost a lot of the original charm of the old school style of blogging. Even blogging platforms have evolved so much! There was a time I used to hand-code my updates via NotePad (yes I was a PC user yonks ago) and this was before there was any sort of commenting system in place.

I love that these changes have allowed us to focus more on (as HB aptly put it) generating verbal diarrhea. Which is probably exactly what this is!

Have a good weekend! I hope to see some sun at least, these past few days thick fluffy blankets of light grey have been hovering low over Sydney and it has been rather depressing/hard to not think of burrowing under the duvet while at work.

Ah. Am having a bout of nostalgia.

Just recovered my Lycos password for an old guestbook I used to have linked here – way before blogs had a proper comments system people used to use that as a primary mode of leaving notes! Imagine that..

Kind of missing the days where keeping a blog took some time and effort, when nothing was automated and putting an entry up took a lot of fiddling around with Windows Notepad and FTP! The days of webrings, and link exchanges, and I’ll-sign-your-guestbook-if you’ll-sign-mine! Hands up if you remember all that!

Reading through old posts/guestbook entries/comments is also making me feel a little old. I’ve been doing this for close to ten years now. Am completely out of touch with the people I used to interact with online on an almost daily basis. I wonder where they all went, if they’re still blogging, if they’re married with kids, if they remember the nonsense we used to get up to!

Also, just a little bit pleased to find that Friday Five still exists!

I’ve just done something completely random and emailed the bassist from a band that I once posted pictures of because his guestbook entry was just so funny. Incidentally they are an Australian band and I am curious if they are still together. I doubt I’ll get a reply, but who knows.

Decided to (slowly) reinstate very old posts that I’ve taken off to minimise clutter on this blog. At the moment it only dates back approximately 12 months.

It is pretty hilarious (for me) to go through them again, and despite a lot of it being terribly cringe-worthy, life seems so much simpler almost a decade ago!

New blog!

Note — (Oct 2011) This blog has been around for around a decade or so and this is the first post that was live using a content management system called Grey Matter.

In between this first self-hosted blog post and current-day posts you will find a whole chunk of it (and some bits) missing. The blog (and me) have evolved some over the years and I feel that now, a lot of it is fairly yawn-inducing mundane details of one girl’s life in a past blog era that no one should be subject to enduring. A lot of stuff that is online still is, but hopefully with more pretty pictures to distract you :)

Thanks for reading,

Porting the blog over to new self-hosted goodness! This is my first GM post, ever. Feels brand new!

I think the site should be working fine now.. the earlier entries for 2001 has just been added to journal archives.. phew. Took awhile!

So much for watching a movie and cleaning my room, I’m pooped, spent half a day on this already. I’m gonna go sleep now.

Hope you like the new blog. :)
