I’d seen so many pictures of Santorini from M’s blog but I didn’t realise they were mostly of Oia.. imagine my surprise when I arrived to high, imposing cliffs on a ferry I thought was big when I left Mykonos but felt quite small sailing into the port.. the smattering of white buildings clinging to the tops looked like snow from below.

Holidays are funny things; the good ones I mean. You can’t really bear to leave but you do. You can’t really bear to be back but you are. Suddenly it all seems so far away, like that was another lifetime ago where the sun’s out and only thing you think of in the morning is where to get the morning’s fresh coffee.. not knowing what that day might bring, whom you may meet and what you will learn.. I’ve been really inspired from my time away and a place like Greece for someone like me is an awakening of sorts.. suddenly Sydney has lost it’s appeal.. perhaps it’s becoming a little too familiar.. perhaps it’s the Winter weather.. I wonder if that’s a good thing or not. I’m sure it’s only temporary.. I’ve always been happier in Summer.

I’ve been in Santorini for over a week now. It only gets better. There is no denying that this island is something special. Today we walked down to Ammoudi, the port where part of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants was filmed. We met the cutest stray dog who led us around the left side of the port to the little island. He kept stopping to check if we were following behind. There used to be a path there but sometime last year there was a landslide and the fallen rocks have blocked the path but he knew the way. When we got there our furry friend walked another group back to the port and we swam across to the island. It was a little scary knowing that while the way across was shallow the sides of it was a sheer drop of 1200m down, the water so dark I could only see a deep blue void..
Now we’re at a cafe waiting for another magical Oia sunset before heading off to dinner. It’s quite an event – everything stops during the sunset. I’ve never seen anything quite like it.

There is so much I want to say about this place but I will save it for when I’m back in Sydney, where it will be Winter, if only to be able to savour this magic a little while longer.
This is our last sunset from Firostefani. We are moving to the other end of the island, to Oia, where the sunset is even more spectacular. I can’t imagine how!

Miss M and I are on what is certainly the most beautiful island in the world! I can’t take my eyes off the caldera. This place is impossibly gorgeous.. here are some pictures from my iPhone:
