shopping

Last year I put together a list of gift ideas as well as a ‘how to’ shop guide, I think it’s worth a read if you are stuck on what to get a certain someone for Christmas – you can read the post here: Christmas Gift Shopping 101.

I don’t want to repeat myself this year, so here are some ideas that might hopefully help with your holiday shopping! If you do it online, just make sure you double check the shipping cut-off dates, postal service gets massively bogged down towards the end of the year and you want to get your stuff on time :)

Balatro Sydney

Balatro Sydney

Balatro Sydney

Discovered this amazing shop on the weekend while wandering around Surry Hills. It’s a big space on Riley St that is filled with all sorts of second hand furniture but as I walked in the room revealed a huge space filled with all kinds of new and secondhand clothing! Owner Dawn was kind enough to let me take pictures and here are some of the stuff I found. She ships a lot of stuff over from the UK so there is a whole rack’s worth of past season (but new) Kate Moss for Topshop and a quick browse revealed she has some of the dresses that sold out at launch, including the iconic dobby dress..

Friday Five 14 Oct

It has been an interesting week for me fashion-wise. I’ve always had a love for fashion but only recently I’ve been out taking some street style pictures for a website (more on that later) and it has made me realise a few things:

Great looks don’t necessarily follow trends, but can create them
Not everyone can pull off a particular type of look (and it’s made me feel a bit better for some of my less successful experiments!)
Sydney is incredibly diverse when it comes to fashion
I am really interested in the thought process behind a great look, it can some times be just about the dress or the shirt but how it is finished off can take it from great to amazing
Not quite enough people wear hats

Taking photos of strangers has made me pay so much more attention, in the split second from I spot them to when I walk up to them, all the little details that can only be seen up close. It has been said that women dress for other women but I think that’s not entirely true. I get a lot of pleasure from the little things in my outfits that often go unnoticed and seeing so many detail shots in fashion blogs makes me feel a little vindicated somehow :)

I think fashion blogging, with so many people contributing to a global culture in so many different ways, is definitely changing the way we dress in one way or another. My blog list has expanded exponentially in the past month. There are so many good ones out there, so please share yours with me if you have one or know of some I may not have heard of!

I love details in my clothes and here are some dresses that caught my eye this week – BCBG clothes always have great little details like this one with the beautiful folds working so well with the fabric and colour tones; a simple knit dress by M Missoni in a really amazing colour combination, and I suspect would look quite amazing with a tan; a rather dramatic hemline by Topshop that will be perfect for summer with tan sandals; a cutout maxi by local Aussie designer Stylestalker with a sheer skirt and an exposed zip which may be past season but still looks like it should be hanging in my closet and this leather combo dress from ASOS I’m thinking of buying.. I really love leather and I’m not afraid to admit it!

BCBG Max Azria Gretchen draped dress in grape
M Missoni Knitted cotton dress
ASOS Leather bodice dress with sweetheart neckline
Topshop Orange one shoulder trail hem dress
Stylestalker Venom cutout maxi dress

Have a lovely weekend wherever you are!

Friday Five - 23 September

I’ve been seeing these AW shoes just about everywhere! Really love the minimalist profile on it and the cape detail that reminds me of comic superheroes and just having a little bit of fun.. after all isn’t that what fashion is all about? It also comes in mirror-finish silver and pink.

Came across LA-based label Elkin on one of my trawls. They do some interesting takes on everyday pieces with amazing details and a sexy edge and have only been around for a year! Can’t wait to see more from them. The skirt would go really well with my well-worn JC Brit boots I picked up last year and the Sass & Bide dress has an awesome peekaboo detail at the back!

Alexander Wang Fabiana shoes
Minkpink Nothing to hide skirt
Sass and Bide All you need dress
Elkin Crow short

Sunday markets

Sundays

Sundays

Last Sunday, W and I walked across the Sydney Harbour Bridge. We checked out the Sunday markets in Kirribilli and I did some thrift shopping and came home with a Josh Goot dress for $4, a brand new chiffon cobalt blue top for $3 and a handmade dress from India that needs a little TLC for Summer. It’s a gorgeous burnt clay brown but a little faded on the corners, so next weekend’s little project will be to redye it. Thrifting is so much fun!
