Sydney

It’s 5am and I’m wide awake. I don’t know how many times I’ve made mental notes about not having coffee past 10pm but I still do it on occasions. This time my excuse was that watching Dark Knight on a huge IMAX screen was so fun that err.. well.. wait, I think it’s the freezing temperatures upon exiting the cinema that persuaded me to go “Hey, let’s grab a coffee!”. Although in hindsight the cinema was probably colder than being outside at 11:30pm.

[Six days later]

The past two weeks have been pretty full on. Mom was in town for a bit, and we were doing a fair bit of exploring all over Sydney and beyond. Including a 40-minute trip to Thornleigh to check out this Malaysian restaurant my cousin’s hubby is going to work at. He’s a chef. Anyway, the food was well worth the journey, so much that a return trip for the monthly assam laksa special was made on Sunday. I was blown away, it’s the nicest I’ve had in months and not just because I’m here. It’s better than the one I always have during my local pasar malam that I’ve had since forever! Didn’t manage to take any pictures.. forgot about that when the food arrived. Haha. Anyway, the restaurant is called Makan @ Alice’s and they make really good nyonya kuihs and do BKT for dinner.

I wish I had some pictures to post. Must remember to use camera when I’m out. That’s if I remember to bring it out :P

Have been enjoying the food here quite a bit. And really, really enjoying cooking it at home! I made grilled lamb cutlets with coriander pesto and mint leaves, garlic sesame prawn fettucine (turned out awesome.. although most people would find the garlic overpowering, I like it that way) and I made lamb backstraps with lemon myrtle couscous from a DJs recipe because mom bought macadamia oil and peppercorn steak with cheddar mash potatoes and asparagus cooked in a butter sauce and baked herbal chicken. Yum. Of course I enjoy eating out also but I have to watch my expenses :/ So many restaurants so little money.. kek.

Oh err.. almost forgot to mention the wine too. Went in search of my fav wine, the St Clair whites, and so far no where I’ve been to stocks this.. which is strange since it’s an NZ export. Finally met someone who was able to tell me where to get it here. Apparently it’s the only place that sells this stuff here and this guy, Michael from Dan Murphy’s, seems to be a big fan :) He recommended something quite decent with the same flavours as the St Clair, but if I wanted a bottle of St Clair I have to travel about 30 mins to get it. They do city deliveries but minimum order is 12 bottles.. GG.

I miss Vintry! And I’m jealous of all you people (you know who you are) who can drink this whenever you want :P Oh BTW its in the $23–27 range here.

Oh and here are some long overdue pictures from Good Living Growers’ Market in Pyrmont that I went to with Nick last month. The next one is this weekend and it happens only once a month :( I got some really super awesome to die for lamb patties there the last time, so I’m praying those guys will be there this weekend! Also awesome gourmet potatoes and hopefully I save enough money to buy an eye fillet. And cheese! Must remember to drag Zona along.

This is not turning into some food blog. I’m still giddy over the food choices here. Not that there’s not a lot of food in KL, dammit I’m Malaysian I don’t need to justify my love of food :) Also, to be honest I haven’t been up to that much else. There’s still a million things on my to-do list but I haven’t felt compelled to tick those boxes so fast. Am looking forward to this weekend though, working whole of this week so I haven’t had much time to run around.. not even at night because I’m catching up on Boston Legal. Dammit Roy <3

iWant?

Have you got your iPhone yet?

Seems like iPhone fever has hit the world. I was in Brisbane when it launched, by the time we were at the Optus store, we were greeted by vast amounts of confetti all over the place. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone cracked open a bottle of bubbly, too.

Glass-fronted, fruity goodness

Am quite tempted to pick one up. On a 24-month postpaid plan, the phone is practically free: it only costs A$2/month on top of usage charges. But it actually all comes down to the fact that I don’t need one. I just really want one. Which means I probably won’t get one. :/

In other news, things have been rather engaging. Had lots of fun at the Aroma Fest, spent an immersive week in Brisbane with Roy, Phoung and the cast of Boston Legal, (was sad for a minute when Roy told me people like Alan Shore don’t exist – they are solely created for telly), did absolutely NO SHOPPING (almost), dodged A LOT of human traffic around the city (WYD08), spent an obsessive amount of time looking at paintings, got my flights delayed because of crazy airport traffic, had a home-cooked meal for the first time in a long while (thanks, mom!), and got my first rejection letter and my first freelance job in the same day. While probably breaking all grammar rules with that long sentence!

Hope you’ve been well :)

Some snaps from last weekend’s Good Food and Wine Show at the Convention Centre. I was just telling Zona how there’s always so much going on here! Sydney Film Fest and Biennale of Sydney is just going on, and coming up are.. World Youth Day (largest in the world apparently, even the Pope’s coming and they’re closing up my street!) The Rocks Aroma Fest, Sigur Ros, Death Cab, Splendour in the Grass, Freedom Fest.. and that’s only in the next two months!

Sydney so far

The internet at the place I’m staying at is pretty unstable to say the least. It’s been rather frustrating trying to get online, half the time it’s down and I have been relying on my phone to retrieve any important mails I have in the meantime. Will get round to replying my other emails when I move in to my new place in a week or so. Hopefully the internet’s set up by then.

Sydney’s been rather interesting. Today I went to the cinema to catch Sex and The City and am rather glad I did despite the $17.50 ticket. I’ve forgotten how much I used to like watching the series. Chris Noth is absolutely divine. So are the clothes. The rest of my time has been divided among apartment hunting (which I am rather thankful that I’ve managed to find a place), furniture (window) shopping and starting next week, job hunting. I’ve been taking my time with the last one as I decided I really want to sort out a place to live first. Although being unemployed is just about killing me at the moment, I hate having so much free time and I really miss just being in a work environment.. there hasn’t been much stimulation for me thus far and the most exciting thing I’ve done was putting my self to work by obsessively tracking down and mapping apartment inspections to go to. Never thought I’d miss work this much but I do!

I’m just glad that I have my laptop with me (and I pray everyday when I leave my room that no one breaks in LOL). Everything else has been quite different from my life in KL, even though I have spent a lot of time in Australia and I’m familiar with the way stuff works here I miss the small luxuries such as having a car to drive around. Instead I’ve started memorising bus and train timetables, road names, building names and trying to keep track of cardinal directions. And praying it doesn’t rain. Gosh I can’t wait for summer already.

In frames

My last couple of days in KL have been pretty full on. But although the days have been coming and going at full speed I somehow feel that things are often moving in slow motion. It’s finally sinking in! I concluded my gastronomy farewell at Ozeki, the Volcano Roll is to die for! So much food, so little time :/

Have finally finished packing. Looking forward to Brunei and seeing the family in Brisbane. Planning has been overwhelming but under control.. this departure is a lot less hectic since I’m not really in a rush to check things off my list this time. Can’t wait to get to Sydney, I’ll make it in time for the Good Food and Wine Show.. thanks Nick :)

In the meantime I have been doing really odd things in between packing. Like talking to m2u’s MSN bot, Agent M. I’d only just found out about it because I’m not an m2u user. Am quite fascinated by its responses and duly spending an inappropriate amount of time talking to it.. although attempts at asking it out for dinner proved quite futile. QQ.

Steph says:
two ringgit
Agent M says:
OK, but all I have is worthless Russian Rubles… What else do you have to say about money?
Steph says:
give me some
Agent M says:
Do you NEED some, or do you just really WANT some.
Steph says:
SHOW ME THE MONEY
Agent M says:
Earn it yourself.

Steph says:
you’re hot
Agent M says:
I think you’re hot.
Steph says:
no, YOU’RE hot
Agent M says:
Can’t I be hot every once in a while? I do enjoy the conversation, but let’s talk about what I’m really here for. Type “?” or “help” to see the list of topics available.
Steph says:

Agent M says:

Steph says:
!!!!

If you’d like to talk to Agent M about your maybanking stuff, add m.m2u@maybank.com.my to your MSN list.

I hope I haven’t forgotten anything; OCD has kicked in and I have a list of my list.. haha. How typical! Wish me luck :)
