Hunter Valley

posted on: June 30, 2024

There aren’t many things I would prefer to do than to try something new or explore someplace I haven’t been. Some times this obsession of mine does more harm than good especially when it involves a whole lot of unsuspecting people (like, when I thought organising a collective bungee jump was a great idea!) and some times it results in an awesomely fun day; and if everyone is happy after that’s just a bonus.. or the after effects of an afternoon of wine tasting.

[From top; L-R]
#1 - Breakfast at All Press.
#2 - Book for the day; I am enjoying Hobb’s assassin series immensely though it took me about 2 months and constant bugging from MJ to get on it. Once you pop you can’t stop! Am now on the second book in the trilogy.
#3 - Ray mapping out our route to destruction
#4 - Lunch - salt and pepper calamari! Wasn’t half as good as it looked.
#5 - Gorgeous country
#6 - I believe this was the Hope estate function room
#7 - And it begins!
#8 - Favourite of the day: Brokenwood estate
#9 - Last stop, Peterson House

Though it’s not really my first time at Hunter Valley - I barely even remember my first trip more than a decade ago. We went up for the food and wine fest that was happening that weekend but blew it off entirely once we started hitting the estates. Can you really blame us? There are some bangin’ wineries around the Hunter region and I really should stop using these shocking adjectives.

I love that my friends here love food as much as I do. And we all love to cook. Right now I’m talking to one of them about apartment kitchen sizes on rental listings; and how I want to convert my living space to a kitchen - totally outrageous!

It’s been fucking cold lately. I know I’m soft though, I grew up in a place where cold meant it’s 20c in the pre-dawn hours when I’d be driving home from some party with the windows down having a smoke. It was a lot colder in NZ when I was living there but I didn’t stick around long enough to get used to NZ Winters. And up until the end of last week I thought I’ve been doing pretty well lounging at home in shorts, three weeks into the season. Bah.

Things I like about Winter:
1. My Winter jackets
(I have to admit, It IS fun to flounce around in wool and angora.. no matter who tells you otherwise)

2. Winter food
Stews, bakes, pies - any excuse to crank on the stove/oven and get some heat on. And when friends decide to cook, staying in and having some wine is the best fun ever:

Jo made dinner and Ray made this amazing chocolate orange cake with cola icing for dessert <3

And then we had some dessert wine

Can’t think of any other reasons I like Winter - over it already!

It’s been a week since my last post. I still haven’t gotten around to putting those pictures from Hunter Valley up; this week I’ve just been chasing deadlines and it has been a crazy couple of days because we’re putting out an E3 special report and the event was so close to deadline. Now that’s over I have some catching up to do..

This morning we had a late start at work. I’d like to think my day started like any other normal day, but it already feels like the weekend - it normally does post-deadline. Australia is out of the World Cup despite a 2-1 victory against Serbia and we have a new prime minister as of two hours ago. Ruski just recovered from a bout of kitty UTI, strangely enough mainly from dehydration because he spends too much time in front of the heater and doesn’t drink enough water (he’s also old) and I have a ton of things to do; some of which includes checking out new games, planning a dinner party and looking for a new rain shower. I know – nothing like it – I like to spoil myself some times!

In other news, seriously considering joining a Scrabble club!
