After over a month of email tennis amongst a few people whom I fondly think of as my Malaysian family here in Sydney, we finally made it to McKell Park for a picnic. Being Malaysian, naturally, food was of utmost importance and we delegated the labourious task of making a complete nasi lemak meal equally. Between the six of us we covered pretty much everything - Jo even took the trouble to make sambal sotong and man the boy can cook! He also brought some mee siam which goes really well with chicken curry.
I made the rice. It was fairly easy, and luckily I had some notice so I brought some pandan leaves (screwpine) back with me from my uncle’s garden in Brisbane. It goes something like this: throw in a few pandan leaves (tied in a knot), some ginger slices, pinch of salt and ground ginger and replace half the liquid with coconut milk. It was my first time making it but after looking up a few recipes online and asking the family, it turns out that everyone has their own particular spin to the ideal recipe so I decided to wing it. Thankfully it turned out well.
I had some friends visit from KL just before, and was semi panicking because I woke up that Sunday with a hangover!
This is Jo airing out his Givenchy rug. He’s tops - our fried ikan bilis even came in a designer box.
Thankfully the weather held up, and the ‘honorary’ Malaysians even brought drinks (sirap bandung) and dessert (sago pudding!). The food was delicious.. and check out the view of the harbour! One of the many things I like about living in Sydney.
I think these themed outings are becoming a regular thing, maybe for the next one we will attempt to make some Indian food.
