Class of ’98

An old friend got in touch with me today much to my chagrin - in the morning during coffee break I read something about having a blast from the past in the horoscopes section of the paper. All of a sudden I realise that we’ve had zero contact since we left high school and in place of conversation all I had to fill in the blanks were a few pictures from her life. And what an interesting one it is. The fact that she chose to pursue her passion for animals as a career choice made me smile.

Class of ’98. All of a sudden I missed high school and the bunch of crazy geniuses I shared a class with. Most have gone on to pursue careers we often joked of as kids - doctors, nuclear physicists, vets, lawyers, pharmacists - and I’ve often felt I was the black sheep of the lot, being in the top science stream class and choosing to be a designer instead. Some times people ask me why; I usually say you can’t judge something you’ve never tried. Today made me realise that despite how hard the job is some times I’ve never regretted doing what I do. That’s probably what set our class apart from most - we’re all doing what we want to do. That’s what I like to believe anyway.

Should any of you be reading this do get in touch.

Food for thought?

Need to find a new bunch of people to eat with. My old bunch has somehow split across 3 continents and 6 timezones over the last year and slowly dwindled down to just two. It’s hard to order for just two. Having said that, it is actually quite hard finding the right group chemistry when it comes to food preferences and choices. And finding a group who will trust anothers meal order in virgin territory is almost impossible.. by this I mean opinionated food lovers, not gluttons ;) Anyway these acts of indulgence will have to wait for a while. Will be traveling over the next couple of months so I guess I need to save.. and eat there instead ;)

Oh the thought of a big fat perfectly cooked medium rare steak is enough to make my mouth water at this ungodly hour. With home made mash potatoes….

And Krispy Kreme for dessert? (Dammit Nick, I am still thinking about that picture you posted on your Flickr! Groar!)

3am musings

in Off my head

I deduced, rather accurately, that my evening would have been better spent attempting sleep. On the contrary I found myself rushing from one end of the Klang Valley to another, my journey ending rather surreptitiously amidst a happy alcohol-fueled crowd in a club. The Martinis were blended lychee and soda in disguise and the playlist has seen better days. It was fabulous, however, to see the people I went to see. I only wish it were earlier, and that the lychee and soda might have induced a better state of mind.

On a different note, I’ve just discovered (or rather EE did) what pops up when you search for “Deviantart Malaysia”, and am accordingly embracing my new celeb status in EE’s semi-warped reality :)

EE: I’ve decided my new definition of official celebrity is “if you can come out first on a google search without typing your name into the search”

Me: sorry i dont do autographs

A change of atmosphere

Chanced upon this track on my iTunes last night: Rush - Big Audio Dynamite. Had it on repeat for about 3 hours whilst working. It is awesome. Not because I’m rushing deadlines, LOL, it just has an extremely catchy beat and is quite random. I like.

I think I need to spend the weekend weeding through my music. Just hit the 5000 mark and I hardly listen to most.. my poor MBP is running out of space :( I really hate deleting music!! But TBF’s been going crazy with the torrents and Grimmer’s been sharing so my collection has been expanding like mad. I would stop stealing music but I cannot help it.

On another note, The Writer is in town. Been really busy at work though, wanted to go Mambo to meet up but didn’t make it.. all my magazines are going to press this week and next.. argh. Not to mention the crazy new contract we just got this week that is due next Wednesday.. madness. Strangely I think all of us live off this vibe. Amazing :)

My company is hiring one more designer (junior position) so if anyone is interested drop me a line for more details. Yes, your ticket to contagious mad vibes and the craziness that is the publishing industry.

Sun, surf and plastic bottles

Spent some time at the beach on the weekend. It was too short a time, but I always remind myself quality > quantity. Got a little saddened by how dirty the beaches were this time of the year - or perhaps all the time - we spent some time picking up trash when we were leaving. Empty drink packages, bottles, diapers, plastic bags, Styrofoam food containers.. just about anything that was disposable was carelessly disposed of.

Someone even left this behind:

How romantic it is to find a door in the middle of a beach and wondering where it leads to.. the sad reality is it is trash, over time it breaks down and eventually these pollutants will enter and disrupt marine food chains which will in turn affect us. On days like this I am ashamed to be part of this country that is blessed with such beautiful natural resources yet contribute so little to its preservation.
