Lunch

I spent lunch today with Anthony Bourdain. Ordered a lunch special of pacific clam congee at Chopstick Noodle House before digging in to Bourdain’s rant on the finer points of traditional French cooking before I realised the mistake of my ways: his novel, almost obsessive commentary on food is not to be taken with a heavy dose of commercial congee drowned in soy sauce, pacific clams or not. I am obsessed with him, not because I have tasted his cooking, but because of his obvious great love of food. Perhaps I seek to live vicariously through his notes - Le Bernardin will not be imparting any press treatments on me - because I truly believe there is no sincerer love than the love of food and who best to describe it than someone who loves it as much as life itself? That is such a turn on. Women who love food make fantastic friends, but men who love food I find extremely intriguing. It is about as universally ’something in common’ anyone can have. I’m not even talking gourmet. I was brought on a sensual vocabulary-infused journey from old school France to Brazil, each and every flavour lovingly translated into ‘chef-porn’ all the while having reality slap me in the face with each bite I took. The way he described old-style German gastronomy strangely reminded me of the time I shared a very sensual Godiva kiss with someone. I asked myself if I could leave the life I know here tomorrow just to travel, work and eat my way across the world. I could. Isn’t that a scary thing to know about oneself when one has bigger things in the picture, like commitments? Bah.
