DIY Skirt

For whatever reason the perfect black skirt has eluded me for the longest time, and after getting a sewing machine from W’s mum for Christmas the stars aligned and I was motivated enough to make one by myself. It took a while to find the perfect black fabric but last month I found The Fabric Store where I unearthed the perfect heavy black cotton fabric with just the right amount of sheen. It’s even got pockets and stuff (go me!!); not quite done perfectly but for my first ever sewing project I’m massively happy with the result. Worn simply with.. an oversized sweater I bought in KL and a pair of shoes I was obsessed with 8 years ago and still am!

DIY skirt / Zara oversized striped sweater / United Nude Möbius shoes / Zara bag

How many pairs of Möbius do you have babe? ;)

    • http://absolutely-fuzzy.com Stephanie

the original 4 pairs i bought ages ago, 3 open toes (this, a blue and a black version) and an off white closed toe.. if I get around to buying more UN, this is my next one: http://www.unitednude.com/lo-res-lo-black-rubber-1529 :) the mobius is really comfy though, probably why i didn’t sell them with the rest of my UN collection

Such a beautiful mini skirt, you did well to make it yourself, I would have no idea how to begin! It looks nice with the slouchy top :)

I never understand why sometimes the simplest things are the hardest to find in stores? Anyway, it turned out great & for a first attempt you should be extremely pleased, it looks perfect to me. If you ever need any help with anything sewing/pattern cutting related feel free to drop me an email :)
Still obsessed with those shoes too, I bet you never imagined when you brought them you’d still be wearing them & loving them 8 years later, they’ve lasted so well!

    • http://absolutely-fuzzy.com Stephanie

Thanks Steph, I might have to send some noob questions your way soon, have plans to make a version of the Acne Nubia pants.. haha. Very ambitious! And yes UN seems to make shoes that don’t really lend to any particular trend, I love that they last ages too. Had to re-glue a strip because of age but the Mobius has a kevlar strip so it’s a pretty solid build :)

      • http://www.faiiint.com Stephanie / FAIIINT

Yeah, sure, send them my way & I’ll be happy to help! :) I think the Acne pants would be fairly easy, it seems they are just quite large at the waist & then the excess is gathered onto elastic that is the correct waist size, definitely diy-able! xx

Welldone hun! It’s really beautiful and it fits you great! The whole look is perfect on you, but I love the fact that you made that skirt!
i’m trying to teach myself and learn how to sew too, but… I really don’t know if I’m good in that!
    Gorgeous!

Congrats on making your first skirt. It looks great! Wish I could do it too!

    • http://absolutely-fuzzy.com Stephanie

Thanks M, I think you definitely can, it wasn’t too hard, I copied the shape of a longer skirt that I have so I know it will fit.

I think you’ve done exceptionally well for a first skirt especially as you’ve even managed to put pockets in! I managed a shift dress once from a pattern I sort of “followed” or didn’t follow and somehow managed to squeeze in to it and probably tore it getting out as I didn’t put a zip in as I deemed that a step too advanced for my skills. The skirt looks fab with the Zara top and the shoes - you’ve pulled off this monochrome look fantastically well. I told you, you are the cool girl :o)

I agree with Steph that the simplest things are the most difficult to find in stores! I’m so impressed that you made the skirt by yourself and the result is great! Actually, I would love to be able to sew and knit…hopefully one day I’ll find the right motivation! BTW, the shoes are stunning and certainly a great ‘classic’ for your wardrobe!
