DIY Spiked Wedges

It’s been a while since I shared a DIY - here’s one I did recently on the pair of shoes from this post. Unfortunately they’re now sold out, but this will work on anything with a covered heel. Here are a few similar pairs I found - 1, 2, 3 - but it’s probably a better idea to do this on something you already own and want to refresh. Instructions after the jump :)

You need:
Some tape (and a marker)
Tape measure
Phillips screwdriver
Some screw studs (I used these)
A hole punch or dart awl

Step by step
1. Place some transparent tape over the back seam of your shoes. The idea is to make precise markings, and the tape lets me do that with a Sharpie without damaging the shoe and still see what’s underneath, so if you’d like to use something else (ie. chalk or pencils - works just as well) you can skip this step :)
2. Make a little dot on the tape where you want your studs to be. I used a fine point black Sharpie for this, but for illustration purposes I’ve dotted it red in the picture. For the size 13 cone studs that I used the holes needed to be a minimum of 1 cm apart. Make sure they are dead center, though if your shoe has a regular seam at the back there should only be one line.
3. Take the hole punch (or dart awl) and make a hole where you’ve marked them out. Insert screw base as pictured.
4. Screw on studs, tighten properly with screwdriver, and you’re done! Easy!

For shoes with a back seam that look like mine here, a hole punch is probably easier as there is a bit of extra leather to punch through. If your shoes have a regular seam, a dart awl would work just fine. Make sure you screw the studs on tight and the screw base sits flush inside otherwise they will be uncomfortable.

Enjoy!

Amazing!! I’ve seen spike shoes before but love your version. Subtle yet still makes a statement!!

Oh I’ve been wanting to try this but tell me, doesn’t the base of the screw in stud dig into your heel?

Mine doesn’t - if you screw it in properly, the back should sit flush against the leather. You can always glue a strip of leather/fabric to cover the screws if you find that they do bother you. Having said that I probably wouldn’t attempt this DIY on a pair of shoes that are too tight :) Let me know how you go!

You did a fabulous job with this DIY! I like spikes on shoes only to a minimal point, just like this. Sometimes it gets to be too much!

These are absolutely amazing! I love that you only used 3 spikes, its really quite subtle but they are still quite statement making. The spikes really compliment the very pointy & angular shape of the shoes too, perfect choice for this DIY!
