Absolutely Fuzzed - 19/03/2003: "Drugged"

Yesterday was hell. Had to walk for half an hour from the lab to the doctors just to be told I've got tonsillitis (and a little bit of everything else, whatever this means) and another 20 minutes to the nearest pharmacy to pick up some penecillin.. went home, tried to take my medication but the pain got so bad I couldn't swallow anything, not even water.. so about 5 or 6 pm when I woke up, I went downstairs to make some chicken soup (haven't had food all day) but I couldn't swallow that either. Sat at the dining table for 15 minutes trying to force some down but ended up not being able to so I gave up and called David for help.

When he came I think he was completely shocked to see me in tears. He took me over to Debbie's (student flat supervisor) whom in turn called the emergency doctor but even that had to wait because you needed a bloody appointment. When I finally got there, the doctor gave me two injections, made me drink this orange liquid which was so bad I started crying all over again and almost threw up, gave me more painkillers and told me to go home and sleep.

By the time I got home I was able to swallow (due to anaesthetics) so I had some porridge Lai Min cooked for me. Went straight up to sleep after that, which was easy because I was so drugged I didn't know what I was saying in my SMS messages to my friends.. anyway I'm probably still not thinking straight so I'm gonna finish this while I still am typing right..

.. plus I've got a whole bunch of emails to reply. Oh, btw I did miss my degree presentation, Doc gave me 4 days off but I called Jo (my degree advisor) last night and she said it was ok if I did it next week. Damn, I wish I could've done it today because it means I have a shitload of work to do next week.. but I can't even talk much less present... sigh.

I know how you feel... had a bout of meningitis too yesterday. Was afraid I couldn't conduct any tutorials 'coz I thought I'd surely lose my voice today.

Doc said t'was meningitis. Viral infection of the throat.. similar effects to tonsilitis.. severe sore throat leading to loss of voice. And a bonus to meningitis is you'll get joint pains and high fever too.

But this is not about ME. pbhhtt!!

bummer... this probably sounds a lil' insincere coming from someone who doesn't even know you.. but I really mean it.. I hope things get better for you soon..

Geez, being sick AND away from home isn't a good feeling at all. I just recovered from a terrible flu/sore throat/cough all rolled into one and hope you will too, soon.
Damn all those Student Health people who insist you make and appointment to see the doc. They do it here too. It's just too lame to fathom! Drink loads of water and get a lot of rest. If you have any "Cap Ibu dan Anak" (Pei Pa Ko) aka Chinese Herbal medicine, down it. Ginger tea wih honey might help expediate the healing process as well. Get well soon.
